Celebrating the Chinese New Year

St Columbkille's celebrates the many cultures of our staff, students, and families.

Our Grade 4 teacher, Miss Ah Tong, and her family of Chinese heritage, recently shared their family's celebrations of Chinese New Year with our staff and students.

During this, Grade 4 learnt about the history of celebrating Lunar New Year, as well as some of the food made to celebrate. They also learned about the relevance of the Chinese Lantern and how to make one.

One of the traditions associated with Chinese New Year is the Red Envelope. The Red Envelope is given by the elders of the community to young members of the community, and often holds money. It is a sign of good luck. The Ah Tong family gave each student a red envelope with chocolate money representing this tradition.

Our core values are at the centre of our school and the values of celebration, community, learning and respect were clearly evident in this Chinese New Year experience.
